Dr Richard M Marshall

I've always liked to build things. Since I outgrew Lego I've been building software, development teams and most recently companies.

I'm Founder and CTO of Rapid Mobile Media Ltd in Edinburgh, Scotland. We founded the company in February 2004. We mobilise applications, but are now focussing on Ad360 Mobile Advertising Platform.

I like to think of us as creating mobile applications that people actually use, but we go much deeper than that.

This blog, however, is much more about my observations on the last frontier, the world of mobile technology. And anything else that crosses my path.

Well done Vodafone UK

I’m quick to complain about network operators, so I shall be quick to congratulate Vodafone UK on two good things.

The first is the introduction of near flat-rate charging for data. £1/day for up to 15Mb works for me. And some days we don’t use it, and we don’t get charge. Nice.

The second was the leaflet  I received with my bill explaining the above. It was superbly clear, wasn’t full of jargon, and outlined all the conditions. A first rate bit of explanation. It deserves a Crystal Mark for clarity.

Well done chaps - keep it up!

Does this mean if you download 50K a day over a month you would be charged £30? For 1500K? Presumably there are other plans available?

Yes, that’s right. Apparently the scheme is optional although the brochure didn’t make it clear how you had to opt for it, and they expect 15% of their users to go for it.

  3. The Mobiliser » Blog Archive » 20% is success? Says:

[…] The mobile industry’s low quality standards seem to be extending into uptake figures. Even with DoCoMo. This article says that they are delighted with 20% update of flat-rate data. I’ve heard that Vodafone will be pleased with 15% adopting their new flat rate tarif. […]
