Dr Richard M Marshall

I've always liked to build things. Since I outgrew Lego I've been building software, development teams and most recently companies.

I'm Founder and CTO of Rapid Mobile Media Ltd in Edinburgh, Scotland. We founded the company in February 2004. We mobilise applications, but are now focussing on Ad360 Mobile Advertising Platform.

I like to think of us as creating mobile applications that people actually use, but we go much deeper than that.

This blog, however, is much more about my observations on the last frontier, the world of mobile technology. And anything else that crosses my path.

Sony Ericsson Does Good

Having sung the praises of the very simple Nokia 1100, some news of a super Sony Ercisson top-end device: the K800i.

Both my wife Roseline and my colleague Duncan have bought one and I’m dead impressed. The screen and the camera are just awesome.

Lots of built in software toys that just worked. Sort of like you’d expect, but it’s always good to see it actually happen!

I’ve lived with this little beauty for 10 days now - long enough I think to expose any latent flakiness that might not be immediately obvious…

So far my only complaint is a somewhat limited battery life. Under fairly “normal” use, with a call or two, some texting, some web browsing, and some camera use, a single charge lasts about 2 days, maybe 3 days if you’re lucky. Not great, but about as good as you can expect considering it’s a small, lightweight 3G phone! Not to mention the xenon flash…

Other than that, it lives up to its promise! I’m totally smitten. I’ve been holding out on buying a new phone for about 18 months now, waiting for that mythical device that does *everything* I want - and now I have it, mwahaha!

    To summarise:

    - the camera is its crown jewel; easily the best camera in any phone out there. It rivals very low-end dedicated digicams, which is saying a lot.

    - the screen is gorgeous! QVGA resolution, big, bright, and the colours and contrast are just stunning! Possibly the best screen I’ve ever seen on a phone (and I’ve seen a lot of them)

    - 3G; always nice… when you get a 3G signal… Which isn’t as often as I’d like, but that’s not Sony Ericsson’s fault!

    - memory stick slot. Built in memory is a perfectly serviceable 70MB (fine for day-to-day photo needs), but at some point I’ll get myself a 512MB or 1GB memory stick and be sorted for photos and music (and I won’t hanker after a USB flash drive anymore!)

    - music! Plays MP3s and - even better, to my mind - FM radio!

    - RSS reader. What a great idea! It means I can check out the BBC News headlines without downloading all of the HTML formatting, images, extraneous links, etc - important when you’ve only got 3MB to play with every month!

    - all-round slickness. The interface is attractive (and highly customisable), operation is smooth and responsive, the hardware is well built and beautifully designed, and everything just seems to work! So many phones get this so wrong!
